Alum recognized in deep foundations industry

M.S. alumna Amanda Parry, EG18, has been awarded a Women in Deep Foundations (WiDF) Professional Development Grant. Awarded by the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) Educational Trust, the grant provides support to attend the DFI’s 44th Annual Conference to promote the advancement of the deep foundations industry through “technical committees, educational programs and conferences, publications, research, government relations and outreach.”

While at Tufts, Parry was the inaugural recipient of the Linda M. Abriola Graduate Fellowship in engineering. She completed her M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2018 and researched her thesis, with a focus in geosystems, in the lab of Research Professor Jack Germaine. Parry shared Germaine’s research interest in soil behavior, specifically how soil properties are affected by environmental factors.

Deep foundations transfer building loads deeper into the earth and farther down from the surface – one example would be a piling. The Deep Foundations Institute is an international association that works for the unification and advancement of the industry. The Women in Deep Foundations (WiDF) committee works within the DFI as advocates for women in the industry. The DFI Educational Trust, which awards the WiDF Professional Development Grant, works to support and encourage individuals in deep foundation-related industries by providing scholarships and opportunities to network with leaders in the industry.

The grants will be presented during the Women in Deep Foundations (WiDF) 5th Annual Networking Reception. This year’s annual conference, held in Chicago, will focus around geotechnical engineering through panel discussions and technical presentations.
